Ginseng Health Benefits

Ginseng is a very ancient herb cultivated in Korea and China. It is also grown in some parts of Siberia. Ginseng has been considered as a rejuvenative tonic. The botanical name of Ginseng is Panax which in Greek meant the complete healer. Ginseng is commercially available in two forms- The red Ginseng and the White Ginseng. The Red ginseng is prepared by heating the roots in steam while the White Ginseng is prepared by peeling and drying the Ginseng roots in the sun. The plant has a history of more than 5000 years.

The ancient Chinese called it Ren Shen or Man’s Root. The Chinese regarded is as the Elixir of life and believed that regular consumption of Ginseng will increase the life span of a person. It was very expensive and sometimes worth more than its weight in Gold. To cater to the demand in China it would have to be imported from Korea at an exorbitant price. The shape of Ginseng which resembled the male sex organ provoked a myth that it can be used as an herb to increase the sexual prowess. Modern science sees Ginseng as a stress fighter and to increase alertness and mental sharpness. Korea is the largest producer of Ginseng followed by China. Russian Ginseng is also available but is believed to be of inferior type.

Ginseng has been studied at length and it can be used as an anti depressant. Regular consumption of Ginseng helps to withstand higher levels of stress both mentally and physically. Ginseng also reduces fatigue, improves memory, and also helps to increase the immunity of the body to ward off flu and other seasonal illness.

Ginseng is found to contain many unique ingredients which have a stimulating action on the Adrenal Glands. Adrenal Glands secrete hormones in stress situations and it is believed that Ginseng acts due to its unique action in stimulating the Adrenal glands.

Another ailment which has puzzled the medical community is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. Persons suffering from this syndrome react poorly to commonly used analgesics. Ginseng has been used with success in such conditions.

Ginseng is a very widely used herbal supplement and is available as dry root, powder or in capsules along with other vitamins and nutrients. Wild Ginseng is considered the best form of Ginseng. Cultivated Ginseng is a bit inferior and believed to be less efficacious. Try to get the Ginseng which is least processed for maximum benefits.
